London Travis woke up with a gasp in a cold sweat. The clock read 9 P.M. He had drifted off into a nap since he had done his writing early today. Sleep came at a price to him, though. To obtain rest he was forced to watch the most ghastly horror pictures his mind could conjure up.
Nightmares were commonplace for him now. He couldn’t remember the last time he had a peaceful night of sleep. It would alarm him now if he had a dream that was normal. Even though he had stopped seeing the bone spirit in the waking world he still haunted the dreaming world.
He returned his head to the pillow and tried to remember the details of his nightmare. It didn’t take long for all of it to come back to him. This particular dream had not involved the bone spirit, not directly anyway.
He had been alone in a dark building where he stumbled around in the shadows until he came to a large open area. It was then that the lights had come on and revealed the interior of a funeral home. Five caskets spanned the front, three horizontally and two vertically on each end.
He wanted to turn and leave, but of course, in a nightmare, your body never does what you ask. He found himself walking toward the open caskets, which he just knew would be filled with long dead corpses, rotting and infested with worms. One of them could possibly be him.
When he reached them, he looked inside each one. He didn’t find long dead corpses, but fresh ones. Five bodies, prepared to be viewed by mourning friends and family. He knew every one of them; they were writing colleagues he had met at least once.
Two of them were middle-aged women whom London knew very well. Each of them had two number one bestsellers to their name. Two of the men were around London’s age, early to mid-fifties. One he had played golf with often and had even discussed at one time doing a collaboration. The other one had been on the best seller list at the same time as London on five separate occasions. They used to joke about chasing one another.
The last face was the one he found the most disturbing. He was a young up and coming writer who was twenty-six. He had a bright future and his first two books had received rave reviews. He was on his way to a promising career and deserved better than lying in a casket.
London wasn’t sure what this dream meant or if it had any meaning at all. It was possible that the dream was prophetic and within the next year he might pick up the paper to find that each of these people had taken their own lives. Another meaning might be that subconsciously he felt a ton of guilt for not sharing his knowledge of the Bone Spirit, and thus endangering the lives of his peers. Or maybe he was just losing his mind.
